Sclerotherapy is performed as a simple office procedure. Multiple injections of a mild sclerosing solution are made directly into the veins with a fine needle. The solution irritates the walls of the veins causing them to stick together, collapse, and eventually be absorbed by the body. After the injections, compression hose are worn continuously for the first 24 hours, then daily for 2 weeks. The procedure is practically painless and requires about 30 minutes to complete.
At the Vein Clinic at PWC, we often combine laser-assisted spider vein treatment with sclerotherapy in a technique known as the “double-injury method.” This technique yields more complete resolution of spider veins and a rapid, beautiful result.
There is no downtime needed after sclerotherapy, so you can return to your normal activities right after your treatment. You will be given specific post-treatment instructions, which may include:
Bruising and hyperpigmentation may occur after sclerotherapy. Bruising typically disappears within 1 to 2 weeks. While the hyperpigmentation usually fades, it can persist for several months. Most patients require multiple treatments for complete results. We often see patients for touch-up treatments once or twice a year as new veins appear.
