Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation
Surgical vaginal rejuvenation, also called vaginal tightening or vaginoplasty, tightens the muscles of the vagina and surrounding tissues. At Pearl Women's Center in Portland, this procedure is performed by board-certified gynecologists who are experienced and trained in gynecological surgery and have a specialized understanding of the anatomy of the female pelvis. For the highest safety and optimal results, it's important to choose an experienced and qualified surgeon to perform this intricate procedure.

Childbirth, weight fluctuations and certain medical conditions can stretch the muscles of the vagina and surrounding tissues, causing them to become lax and, in some cases, protrude out of the vaginal opening. Women choose vaginal rejuvenation surgery for their own personal reasons. This procedure:
- Creates a tighter and narrower vaginal canal and opening
- Removes excess vaginal lining
- Alleviates pressure and discomfort through improved support of the pelvic floor
- Enhances sexual satisfaction of the patient and her partner
- Improves self-confidence
Our doctors can combine vaginoplasty with cosmetic labiaplasty, hysterectomy or another surgical procedure, either medical or cosmetic, to provide multiple improvements with a single surgery and recovery period. Women who would like a nonsurgical option may consider FemiLift™nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments.
Pelvic organ prolapse is a pelvic disorder that can result from hysterectomy, childbirth or menopause and commonly causes vaginal laxity. Surgical correction of this medical condition, which often includes vaginal tightening, is usually covered by medical insurance. However, when the patient does not have the diagnosis of symptomatic prolapse, the surgery is considered elective and is generally not covered.
What to Expect
Our providers perform vaginal rejuvenation as an outpatient procedure in the fully accredited Pearl SurgiCenter. The patient is placed under general anesthesia, but is able to breathe on her own (not intubated), under the care of a certified anesthesia provider. The procedure is performed through an incision in the perineum, which allows the surgeon to tighten the deep underlying muscles and supporting tissues, as well as the opening of the vagina and the perineum. Unlike most doctors who perform superficial tightening of the vaginal opening and repair of the perineum, our doctors also reconstruct the deep vaginal muscles and supporting structures. The procedure is typically complete in 1 to 2 hours.
Depending on the extent of repair required, patients may experience swelling and discomfort afterwards. Typically patients are able to return to work within 2 weeks with restrictions on activity for 6 to 12 weeks.
